A young American man, with the help of a local who speaks weirdly broken English, journeys to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II in a Ukrainian village that was ultimately razed by the Nazis.

A closely observed portrait of Agnes, who has reached her early 40s without ever venturing far from home, family or the tight-knit immigrant community in which she was raised by her widowed father. That begins to change in a quietly dramatic fashion when Agnes receives a jigsaw puzzle as a birthday gift and experiences the heady thrill of not only doing something she enjoys, but being very, very good at it.

Verging on adolescence, Joe finds himself more and more aggravated by his dad's attempts to control his life. Declaring freedom, Joe and his best buddy Patrick, along with an odd kid called Biaggio, escape to the woods, where they construct a house, just for them, with no parents or responsibility. There they discover that they are in control of their destinies, all alone out in the forest.
