Many creatures live at the old haunted house with their children, including one small witch, two little monsters, three kittens, four goblins, five werewolves and more. When the neighborhood children come trick-or-treating, they are invited inside for a fun party with all.

Down in the swamp where the cypress grows, the animals all come out to enjoy the day.

Rhyming text describes a mother guiding her young monster through bedtime preparations, such as howling at the moon, snacking on worm juice and beetle bread, and choosing a bedtime story.

There once was a cowpoke who swallowed an ant—
A fiery thing with a Texas-sized sting.
The cowpoke panted, and his voice got higher.
"Yippie-ti-yay! My stomach's on fire!!"
