Das Wort »Urbex«, eine Kontraktion aus »Urban« und »Exploration«, ist eine Strömung, die in den 1990er Jahren begann. Diese Aktivität, oft unerlaubt, besteht darin, Orte zu erforschen, die für die Allgemeinheit nicht zugänglich sind (verlassene Industrieanlagen, Fabriken und Bürogebäude, U-Bahnen, Baustellen, etc.). Die Stadt wird dabei zum Spielplatz im großen Stil, Urbex-Fotografen berichten mit ihren Bildern von ihren Erkundungen und bieten Einblicke in unbekannte Welten.Systematisch erklärt der erfahrene Urbexer Sergent, welche Vorbereitungen für eine Urbex-Fototour erforderlich sind, welche Ausrüstung, Kenntnisse und Aufnahmetechniken zu eindrucksvollen Fotos verhelfen und wie sie in der Bildbearbeitung optimiert werden können. In zahlreichen Making-ofs stellt er verlassene Orte in Frankreich, Belgien und Deutschland vor und eröffnet dem Leser Einblicke in die Entstehungsgeschichte der Fotografien. Abgerundet wird das Buch von Gastbeiträgen fünf weiterer Fotografen und Ihrer Arbeiten.
