Shakira is stuck doing extra chores to raise cash for new computer equipment. She wonders what the world would be like without money - and how the concept of currency began. Timeblazers Sam and Jen whisk her back in time to when ancient Chinese civilizations used cowrie shells for barter. In the 1800s, goods could be purchased with beaver pelts and in the 1400s, "gold fever" gripped explorers who searched for El Dorado. It was the 1849 California gold strike that brought more than 50,000 prospectors and opened up the Wild West. While most folks determined to come by it honestly, money also bred pirates and train robbers. In her search for spare change, Shakira realizes that getting money dishonestly is often a lot harder than getting it honestly.
