In his fifth outing (following The Three-Nine Line, 2015), flight instructor Cordell Logan tries to prove that his late ex-wife's animal-loving cousin didn't kill a notorious big-game hunter. When Cordell learns that an influential congressman and some highly compensated female guests were frequent fliers on the hunter's private jet, Cordell calls in a favor from a former Special Forces buddy. He's soon on a plane to Europe to do a little work for Uncle Sam, uncovering everything from an international prostitution ring to some very unorthodox campaign contributions. For all his stealth training, however, Cordell is anything but subtle. Fortunately, he can rely on his military muscle memory and back up his big mouth when it gets him in trouble. And, boy, does it get him in trouble! An easy hand-sell to fans of Robert Crais and Tim Cockey and to everyone who likes some snark with their suspense.--Keefe, Karen Copyright 2016 Booklist
Publisher's Weekly Review
A double murder propels Logan's well-paced, action-filled fifth mystery featuring flight instructor and former government assassin Cordell Logan (after 2015's The Three-Nine Line). Late one night, big-game hunt guru Roy Hollister and his wife take a swim in the Africa-shaped pool on their estate in Rancho Bonita, Calif. The next morning, a gardener finds their bodies in the pool, each shot with large-caliber rifle bullets of a type used to fell elephants. When the police arrest animal-rights activist Dino Birch for the crime, Logan's former father-in-law asks him to find out whether Birch is innocent. Logan discovers that Hollister, whose safari-chartering service took a hit in the 2008 financial crash, was using his aircraft to ferry high-priced European prostitutes to cities such as New York and Washington, D.C. Law enforcement took note, and Hollister was about to name names before a federal grand jury. Logan deals smoothly with thugs, prostitutes, politicians, and other lowlifes with only occasional stumbles en route to the satisfying conclusion. Agent: Jill Marr, Sandra Dijkstra Literary Agency. Library Journal Review
Cordell Logan, an ex-government assassin and aspiring Buddhist, just wants to run his small flight school in Rancho Bonito, CA, but he can't avoid getting involved when big-game hunter Roy Hollister and his beautiful wife, Toni, are shot to death. No one in Rancho Bonito is sad to see Roy go, although many enjoyed Toni's largesse in supporting various charities. Logan is dragooned into investigating because the prime suspect, an avowed animal-rights activist, has connections high up in Washington, DC, as well as to Logan's former father-in-law. Following The Three-Nine Line, Freed's fifth adventure featuring Logan will be easily accessible to readers new to the series. VERDICT Fast paced with generous dollops of humor and populated with vividly crafted and colorful characters, this will satisfy admirers of W.L. Ripley's "Wyatt Storme" and "Cole Springer" thrillers. © Copyright 2016. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
