Description

"One of the greatest achievements by Akira Kurosawa (Seven Samurai), Ikiru presents the director at his most compassionate—affirming life through an exploration of death. Takashi Shimura (Rashomon) beautifully portrays Kanji Watanabe, an aging bureaucrat with stomach cancer who is impelled to find meaning in his final days. Presented in a radically conceived two-part structure and shot with a perceptive, humanistic clarity of vision, Ikiru is a multifaceted look at what it means to be alive."

Far from the epic storytelling of Seven Samurai or Ran, Akira Kurosawa here offers an affecting small-scale tale of a Tokyo bureaucrat dying of cancer who, after going a bit crazy when first diagnosed, strives to find a purpose in life by leaving a lasting legacy for his community. Newly restored in high-definition, this edition provides a noticeable improvement over Criterion's decade-old disc release but retains wear marks largely owing to the loss of the original negative. The case for upgrading is no slam dunk, but this humanist classic belongs in most foreign-film collections.
