Seven academics from Australia, New Zealand, and the U.S. contribute six chapters to a resource for students and general readers examining the education systems of Oceania. Following an introductory overview of the topic, each of the subsequent chapters focuses on one of five countries--Australia, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, New Zealand, and Samoa--offering a history of the educational system of the country and an analysis of the contemporary system which describes how schooling is related to national culture; religion; identity; social, political, and economic structures; and economic development. The text includes discussion of several important issues such as colonialism; the effects of Western educational models; the cultures, education and treatment of indigenous and Aboriginal peoples; the effects of development and globalization; the tensions between Western educational systems and indigenous conceptions of education; and differences among countries regarding access! and opportunity systems.
