Choice Review

Davenport (Babson College) has written a thought-provoking book about a current topic that is becoming more important to businesses and individuals every day. Big data are not simply about data analytics, which the author previously describes in Competing on Analytics (CH, Jul'07, 44-6322) and Analytics at Work. Big data are the new and more voluminous form of data generated around the world--by one estimate equaling 2.5 quintillion bytes per day. How businesses and people respond to this data deluge is Davenport's main focus in this very readable and timely book. The author considers how big data will change jobs, companies, and industries; how to develop a big data strategy; the human side of big data, including data scientists; technology for analyzing textual, video, and audio data; what it takes to succeed with big data, including a focus on business culture; and a look at what can be learned from start-ups and online firms as well as large companies. An appendix contains a useful survey to determine an organization's readiness for big data projects. Summing Up: Highly recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above; general readers. E. J.
