Description

Family secrets and a hidden past?a woman’s search to uncover the truth ignites danger and passion in the latest novel from #1 New York Times-bestselling author Julie Garwood. Cordelia Kane has always been a daddy’s girl?her father raised her alone after her mother died in a car crash when Cordelia was just two years old. So when he has a serious heart attack, Cordelia is devastated, and the emotion is only intensified by the confusion she feels when he reveals the shocking truth about her mother. Cordelia can’t suppress her curiosity about the woman who gave birth to her, and when she discovers the answers to her questions lie in Sydney, Australia, she travels there to get them. Hotel magnate Aiden Madison is Cordelia’s best friend’s older brother. He’s oblivious to the fact that she’s had a crush on him for years. When he gets railroaded into taking her along to Sydney on his company jet, he’s unwittingly drawn into a volatile family drama. Aiden wants to help Cordelia get answers about her mother, but threats from her wealthy, high-powered family are quickly becoming dangerous. Sparks are flying between Cordelia and Aiden, but after multiple attempts are made on Cordelia’s life, Aiden realizes he must put a stop to the madness before he loses the thing he values most.

Similar Authors From NoveList

NoveList provides detailed suggestions for other authors you might want to read if you enjoyed this book. Suggestions are based on recommendations from librarians and other contributors.
Linda Howard is a good match for Julie Garwood as she also switched from writing romances to romantic suspense. While Howard's stories are grittier, they share the ability to craft nice love stories even if it is set in a scary situation. Readers also appreciate their skills in developing well-drawn characters and witty, fast-paced dialogue. -- Krista Biggs
In their friendly and welcoming Regency romances, Julie Garwood and Stephanie Laurens explore similar themes of community, family, and deep emotional love. Their heroes share the need to protect the women in their lives and the vexation of loving women who do not want to be protected. -- Victoria Fredrick
Fans of Julie Garwood's romantic suspense novels will also enjoy Karen Rose's work. Rose and Garwood write fast-paced stories successfully balancing romantic and suspenseful elements. They feature well-delineated relationships not only between the romantic leads but between them and others. Both propel their plots through clear descriptions and strong dialogue. -- Katie-Rose Repp
Thieves, human traffickers, and killers loiter with intent in Lori Foster and Julie Garwood's romantic suspense novels. Tough-guy heroes and intelligent, capable heroines find themselves in trouble and in love. -- Mike Nilsson
Kat Martin writes compelling romances in both atmospheric Regency period novels and romantic suspense books set in the modern world. Her work similarly features strong female characters, mysterious hunks, and crackling romantic tension with satisfying payoffs, though her books can be darker in tone and more explicit. -- Derek Keyser
Both authors write medieval, highland, and suspenseful romances on the steamy side, although novels by Banks are sometimes downright explicit. Readers will also enjoy their character development: Garwood's characters often become the main protagonists of later books in a series, while Banks's maintain meaningful relationships outside of their romantic interests. -- Basia Wilson
J.D. Robb and Julie Garwood share the ability to write well-plotted stories with lots of witty dialogue and deeply felt romantic attachments. Each author also crafts strong secondary and repeating characters that readers love to follow. While darker in tone than Garwood, her fans should still find much to enjoy in Robb's writing. -- Krista Biggs
Julie Garwood and Judith McNaught both began by writing historical romances and later turned to contemporary romantic suspense. Although McNaught's contemporary novels feature less suspense and violence than Garwood's, they share the strong undercurrents of romance and the possibility of true love among the characters. -- Victoria Fredrick
These authors write works of romantic suspense, frequently starring characters who work as FBI agents, Navy SEALs, and for other federal entities where unsolved mysteries and budding romances emerge simultaneously. -- Basia Wilson
Julie Garwood and Elizabeth Lowell share the ability to set scenes that draw the reader into the novel's world. Lowell is also good at creating well-developed characters and crafting witty, fast-paced dialogue. Her stories are fast-paced and mix a good dose of suspense with lots of romance. -- Krista Biggs
Iris Johansen and Julie Garwood's characters are well-drawn and likeable. The story moves at a quick pace as they keep the reader hanging at the end of each chapter, thus ensuring frequent page-turning. -- Krista Biggs
Julie Garwood and Karen Robards deliver tightly controlled plots, solid pacing, and romance. Robards' books are a bit more gritty than Garwood's, but the romantic development is as strong as the injections of humor and witty dialogue. -- Krista Biggs

Cordelia Kane can't believe her mother is alive. When she was two years old, Cordelia's father, Andrew, told her that her mother, Sophie, died in a car accident. At first Cordelia has no intention of trying to locate the woman who obviously didn't want her, but Cordelia's curiosity soon gets the better of her. She discovers that her mother is now living in Australia, and, since family friend Aiden Madison is already flying to Sydney on company business, Cordelia is more than happy to accept his offer of a ride. However, once Cordelia arrives in Sydney, she realizes that not only is her mother less than thrilled to see her, she just may be willing to do anything to keep her past a secret. Publisher's Weekly Review

Garwood goes off the rails with this unintentionally creepy sequel to Hotshot, starring a saccharine rich girl and the controlling, possessive man she's inexplicably loved since she was a child. Cordelia Kane always believed that her mother died in a car accident, but Mrs. Kane actually walked out on her child and mechanic husband. Fortunately, there are men nearby who know how to run a web search and solve the trivial mystery of her whereabouts. Aidan Madison-the "ultimate alpha" high-powered businessman Cordelia loves-demands that she accompany him on his private jet to Australia in pursuit of her mother; then he buys her ball gowns and looms possessively. The pieces are all there for a corporate thriller or a story about a woman discovering herself, but readers might well miss them as Aidan takes control of Cordelia's life, restricts her movement and actions, and demands sex from her. This unsettling exploration of flat characters and gender stereotypes lacks both romance and chemistry. Agent: Jane Rotrosen, Jane Rotrosen Agency. (Aug.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. Cordelia has convinced hotel magnate Aiden Madison, her best friend's older brother, to take her to Sydney, Australia—not because she's always had a crush on him but so that she can meet the mother she never knew she had. Unfortunately, Aiden has angered a corrupt politician, which puts them both in (romance-inducing) danger. A fast-track novel.
