Guzzetti (language and literacy, Arizona State U.) presents a four-volume set collecting 56 articles addressing issues and policies of literacy in the United States, with each volume dedicated to a different stage of the life span: infancy through third grade, childhood, adolescence, and adulthood. Seeking to capture the broad range of the field of literacy, the volumes define it to include traditional notions of literacy--reading, writing, listening, and speaking--as well as the consumption and production of non-print texts, such as media and computer texts. Each volume is structured similarly and addresses common topics. Each includes classic, foundational topics as well more cutting-edge issues and is organized into three sections addressing recent trends and issues for that age range, issues in assessment and instruction, and issues that influence literacy practice and development outside the classroom. Additionally, each volume includes issues of federal legislation, funding, and polices affecting literacy assessment instruction and practice; age-specific literacy development and assessment; digital technology and literacy; and the influence of youth and popular culture in literacy instruction. As a whole, the set is intended to provide an accessible introduction to the field of literacy to an audience with little or no prior knowledge of the field. A small sampling of specific topics includes early literacy instruction for linguistically and culturally diverse students, the impact of disabilities on the acquisition of literacy, high-stakes testing of reading and writing at the elementary level, critical literacy and adolescents, teaching literacy for social justice, and workplace literacy.
