author2-role , "Considered to be one of the first bestselling mystery novels, "The Woman in White" was a huge commercial success when it was first published and the riveting tale has continued to enthrall readers ever since.Mistaken identities, locked rooms, madness, and romance-these are a few of the ingredients the author used to inspire ""the 'creepy' effect, as of pounded ice dropped down the back,"" that, according to one of his friends, was Wilkie Collins's aim in writing The Woman in White. Popularly regarded as one of the author's finest works, and widely copied by other writers, this thriller was the prototype for a whole new genre of fiction: the ""sensation novel.""", -1- -01-17-2018 11:19, -1- -03-01-2016 13:59, -1- -09-23-2016 9:46, -1- -12-20-2017 13:33, .b1317603101-13-1801-25-11, .b1486496401-22-1606-09-15, .b1491592301-22-1606-10-15, .b1492341501-22-1606-10-15, .b1495183601-22-1606-11-15, .b1964767005-04-1705-02-17, 0141020318 (pb), 1 online resource (1 audio file (25hr., 29 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (25hr., 30 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (25hr., 47 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (28hr., 01 min.)) :digital., 1 online resource (1 audio file (6hr., 32 min.)) :digital., 10025535Midwest Tape, LLC, 10756507Midwest Tape, LLC, 11104475Midwest Tape, LLC, 11104963Midwest Tape, LLC, 11844822Midwest Tape, LLC, 1400199425 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1483089916 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 1518941869 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 236943, 0141439610, 569 p. ;19 cm., 9629544792 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9629547627 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781400199426 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781416509790 (pbk.), 9781483089911 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781518941863 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9781582882079, 9789629544799 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), 9789629547622 (sound recording : hoopla Audio Book), Abduction, Abridged., Apparitions, Art teachers, Bailey, Josephine.|Narrator, Bavidge, Rachel., Bavidge, Rachel.|Narrator, CAY7162, Collett, Marie., Collins, Wilkie,1824-1889., Corduner, Allan., Country homes, Deception, Dickson, Hugh., Digital content provided by hoopla., Downloadable audio., Downloadable audiobook., England, English qEnglish., Everyman's library ;, F COLLI, FRIENDS-2- -01-11-2018 12:55, Family secrets, Fraud, Gallagher, Teresa M., Geeson, Judy,1948-|Narrator, Gothic fiction., Great Britain, Hailed as a classic the moment it was written in 1859, The Woman in White uses a dozen different narrators to tell the tale of a man's determination to save the woman he loves, in the face of the worst intentions of the sly Sir Percival Glyde and the magnificent Count Fosco., Inheritance and succession, LDR504 LTI 97/04/17 04:13LDR74.2 20100406200649 ITSAITS74.1 20100402114143 mmm 2483ITS56 car 20060817101701 ITS ACPL:ITS56 car 20060414111607 ITS ACPL2ITS55 car 20050816090940 ITS ACPL9LDR506 BNEW 01/03/21 07:50:28, Landor, Rosalyn.|Narrator, Lee, John Rafter.|Narrator, Love stories., MWT10025535, MWT10756507, MWT11104475, MWT11104963, MWT11844822, McCready, Glen., McCready, Glen.|Narrator, McMillan, Roy,1963-, Midwest, Midwesteengrda, Mistaken identity, Mode of access: World Wide Web., Mystery fiction., New York :Dutton,1969., Nobility, OCLC Holdings Updated 20110802, One of the greatest mystery thrillers ever written, Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White was a phenomenal bestseller in the 1860s, achieving even greater success than works by Charles Dickens. Full of surprise, intrigue, and suspense, this vastly entertaining novel continues to enthrall audiences today. The story begins with an eerie midnight encounter between artist Walter Hartright and a ghostly woman dressed all in white who seems desperate to share a dark secret. The next day Hartright, engaged as a drawing master to the beautiful Laura Fairlie and her half sister, tells his pupils about the strange events of the previous evening. Determined to learn all they can about the mysterious woman in white, the three soon find themselves drawn into a chilling vortex of crime, poison, kidnapping, and international intrigue. Masterfully constructed, The Woman in White is dominated by two of the finest creations in all Victorian fiction-Marion Halcombe, dark, mannish, yet irresistibly fascinating, and Count Fosco, the sinister and flamboyant "Napoleon of Crime.", Prebble, Simon.|Narrator, Psychiatric hospital patients, Publisher varies., Read by Allan Corduner, Glen McCready, Rachel Bavidge, Hugh Dickson, Teresa Gallagher and Marie Collett., Read by Glen McCready, Rachel Bavidge, and cast., Read by Josephine Bailey and Simon Prebble., Read by Roger Rees, Rosalyn Landor, John Lee and Judy Geeson., Rees, Roger,1944-|Narrator, Sisters, Streaming audio., Streaming audiobook., Suspense fiction., Swindlers and swindling, TAPTAPVIA, The woman in white /by Wilkie Collins., The woman in whiteWilkie Collins., The woman in whiteby Wilkie Collins., Unabridged., VIAC, Walter Hartright, a drawing teacher to two sisters, wants to marry Laura though she is betrothed to another. But who is the mysterious woman in white who he encounters?, Winner of the 2011 Audie? Award in the Classic Category "There, in the middle of the broad, bright high-road-there, as if it had that moment sprung out of the earth or dropped from the heaven-stood the figure of a solitary woman, dressed from head to foot in white garments."-from the book Thus young Walter Hartright first meets the mysterious woman in white in what soon became one of the most popular novels of the nineteenth century. Secrets, mistaken identities, surprise revelations, amnesia, locked rooms and locked asylums, and an unorthodox villain made this mystery thriller an instant success when it first appeared in 1860, and it has continued to enthrall readers ever since. From the hero's foreboding before his arrival at Limmeridge House to the nefarious plot concerning the beautiful Laura, the breathtaking tension of Collins's narrative created a new literary genre of suspense fiction, which profoundly shaped the course of English popular writing. Generally considered the first English sensation novel, The Woman in White features the remarkable heroine Marian Halcombe and her sleuthing partner, drawing-master Walter Hartright, pitted against the diabolical team of Count Fosco and Sir Percival Glyde. A gripping tale of murder, intrigue, madness, and mistaken identity, Collins's psychological thriller has never been out of print since its publication in 1860. While Collins's other great mystery, The Moonstone, has been called the finest detective story ever written, it was this work that so gripped the imagination of the world that Wilkie Collins had his own tombstone inscribed: "Author of The Woman in White.", Young women, [United States] :Author's Republic :Made available through hoopla,2017., [United States] :Blackstone Audio, Inc. :Made available through hoopla,2009., [United States] :Naxos :Made available through hoopla,2008., [United States] :Tantor Audio :Made available through hoopla,2010., aaf(4)caf01-25-11ma-, audios, computerc, data file, digital, hoopla digital.,, ocm06271290, online resourcecr, othersz, qBook., qFiction., qafea05-02-17mn-, qafea06-09-15mn-, qafea06-10-15mn-, qafea06-11-15mn-, spoken wordspw

The Woman in White is credited with being the first of the sensation novels, and one of the finest examples of the genre. A young woman's husband defrauds her of her fortune, her identity and eventually her sanity. She is saved by her sister and a loyal man who loves her, and her two rescuers attempt to expose her husband. They meet a woman dressed all in white whose fate seems curiously intertwined with that of the young woman. In the tradition of the sensation novel, the story contravenes boundaries of class, identity and the private and public spheres.
