In The Age of Democratic Revolutions, Robert Palmer was one of the first to propose that various upheavals in western Europe and the Americas in the period 1760-1815 were in fact part of a single movement, a great age Western revolution. Obviously in general agreement with Palmer's formulation, Fremont-Barnes (PhD, modern history, U. of Oxford, UK) presents approximately 450 cross-referenced, alphabetical entries distilling information on the era in this two-volume encyclopedia. The entries provide coverage of significant individuals, institutions, events, and ideologies ranging from Tsar Alexander I to Simon Bolivar, from the Boston Tea Party to the Themidorean Reaction, and from Whigs to Jacobins, although the focus is largely upon the American and French Revolutions. The volumes include a chronology, five maps of Europe and the United States, and a bibliography. Also included are 20 primary documents, which include the American Articles of Confederation, the French Revolution's Tennis Court Oath, the French National Assembly's Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, a more documents of the French and American Revolutions.
