The book opens with a lighthouse, a tall red-and-white, seaside tower with a bright light flashing at the top, signaling to ships that they're close to land. The lighthouse keeper lives there with his wife and son, Fynn. Though his father loves their round home, Fynn wants a "square" one, like his classmates' houses. One day, dreaming of adventure, Fynn sets off in his rowboat. As darkness falls, the wind picks up and a storm moves in. Lost at sea, Fynn is relieved to see a familiar light flashing every five seconds. Heading toward it, he notices other boats traveling toward the lighthouse and safety, and he suddenly understands how special his home really is. The story begins with a bit of verbal and visual humor, distinguishing between a traditional lighthouse and a fanciful "light house," but quickly the focus shifts to Fynn's opinions, his adventure, and his change of heart. Created with lively drawings, rich colors, and varied perspectives, Wildish's imaginative illustrations capture the tone of the story. Read-aloud fun for the picture-book crowd.
