Library Journal Review
Traditional techniques combine with modern fabrics and design elements in this volume, which serves as a great introduction for readers new to quilting. Quilt designer Ferons's (founder, Modish Quilter Magazine) book provides clear, well-illustrated instructions for modern quilts made of bold fabrics, solids, and large pieces. She begins with a nice introduction to the tools of the trade. What follows are projects that use some of the most basic quilting units: half-square triangles and flying geese, complex curved piecing (but still with large pieces, making it doable for beginners), and appliqué. Her book demonstrates various techniques, such as free motion, improv, foundation paper piecing, and the dreaded Y-seams. Some of her quilted pieces are made into practical objects such as a thread catcher, storage bins, and even a clock. Readers will also learn how to add patch pockets to jeans and pieced accents to ballcaps. VERDICT A great book for beginner quilters, and intermediate quilters can learn from this title too.--Debbie Bogenschutz
