A brawl in a local hotel's men's room results in a man's death. Relying mainly on evidence presented by Simon Meagor, owner of the town's antique bookstore, a jury convicts George Barker of manslaughter and sends him to prison. On his eventual release, Barker commits suicide.Barker's daughter, Morwenna - the redhead - holds the bookseller responsible for her father's death, and the subsequent breakup of her family. She nurses an obsessive hatred for him, but unexpectedly turns up at his store one day looking for a job. Is she looking for revenge, or a kind of therapeutic healing? Simon Meagor never gets the chance to find out, as Morwenna disappears almost immediately after.Burley's veteran detective Wycliffe returns with this confounding case, and finds his own peace of mind deeply disturbed.
