Description
Cavalcanti (sociology and anthropology, James Madison U.) conducts a sociological analysis of recent developments in American Christian conservatism over the past few decades. Employing a Weberian methodological construct, he seeks to understand why a previously marginalized group has now been empowered to challenge the previous balance between civil religion and a competitive religious market that had once held Christian hegemonists in check. He argues that a significant part of Christian conservatism's success has been due to the promotion of feelings of societal marginality (or social bifurcation) among its membership, but that the decisive change has resulted from the willingness of the marginalized to shift from a previous stance of shunning modernity towards an effort to colonize or co-opt it in the form of Christian media, educational institutions, and political action committees, among other means.
