Description
Finkel (clinical public health, Cornell U.) takes on the biases of both scientists and politicians as she describes their mutual efforts to spin the facts. She finds that politicizing science creates a slippery slope that can do more harm than good as ideologies get in the way of the public good. With this overriding concept in mind she and her co-authors describe exactly how slippery that slope has been in such concerns as contraception, the global IDS epidemic, medical marijuana, needle exchanges, tuberculosis control, dietary supplements, silicone breast implants, obesity, and disease prevention through vaccination. In each case Finkel gives both sides their due and describes what happened when they collided rather than cooperated to develop policies. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
