Pub. Date:
The authors (both: education, U. of Benin, Nigeria) consider the state of education in 10 sub-Saharan African countries: Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Uganda, and South Africa. Touching off from the impact of former European colonizers on the challenges of education and their legacies in African nationalist leadership, each country's chapter discusses its demographics and structure in education, as well as the political and economic policies that the authors say encourage the snail's pace of development in most cases. Special consideration is given to education's relationship to the plight of children in countries at civil war. Adult and informal education are also discussed.
