Gr. 1. "I like stars. / Far stars. / Quiet stars. / Bright stars. / Light stars." Brown's simple poem gets new playful illustrations in this cheerful paperback in the Road to Reading, Mile 1, series. On the first page, the picture of the gray rabbit in bed staring at the stars through the window will remind many children of Brown's beloved classic Goodnight Moon (1947), and that makes a nice connection to the pleasure of reading. This rabbit moves outside and joins a frog, a bird, and a mouse in play and talk about stars. The simple collage pictures give clues to the words, including the names of colors, the ideas of near and far, and, as Leonard Marcus says in his afterword, to the dreamy thought that one star is shining for you.
