This volume is the result of a seminar on the Regulation of Sport in the European Union held at the U. of Leicester in May of 2006, part of The Modern Law Review seminar series. Addressing whether sports law should be a distinct discipline, Bogusz (law, Nottingham Trent U., UK) and Cygan and Szysczak (law, U. of Leicester, UK) compile 10 essays that take a look at the regulation of sports from a European Union perspective, focusing on those in the last decade. Using an interdisciplinary approach that combines law, economics, and sociology, essays address the current policy, legislative, and judicial discourses. Legal and economic aspects of sport as a commercial and cultural activity are examined, particularly what requires formal regulation, free movement and competition rules, and legal principles as applied to Formula One motor racing. Subsequent sections consider dispute resolution and remuneration, the economic and cultural exploitation of sport, and the effects of technology. Contributors work in law and labor economics, mostly in the UK. The book is intended for EU law academics, economists, and political scientists, as well as legal practitioners.
