Without adequate sources of potable water development is impossible, but the approaches to getting and maintaining adequate sources vary widely. Anand (environmental economics, U. of Bradford, UK) explains that while technology and finance are important to water management, if they were the only factors the problem of getting enough water would be solved long ago. He brings together all the other disparate elements in water management, including social, political and economic issues, and explains how they relate to each other and to wider issues of water policies. With case studies and new research he describes the effects of the Millennium Development Goals, the politics of water sharing, and means of improvement. The result is a very accessible treatment of a very complex, and important, factor in the reduction of poverty and increase in development. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
