Description

The book centers on the character of Mr. Harding, a clergyman of great personal integrity, whose charitable income far exceeds the purpose for which it was intended. Young John Bold turns his reforming zeal to exposing what he considers to be an abuse of privilege, despite being in love with Mr. Harding's daughter Eleanor. The novel was highly topical as a case regarding the misapplication of church funds was the scandalous subject of contemporary debate. But Trollope uses this specific case to explore and illuminate the universal complexities of human motivation and social morality. This edition includes an introduction and notes by David Skilton and illustrations by Edward Ardizzone.About the Series: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the broadest spectrum of literature from around the globe. Publisher's Weekly Review

This first novel in Trollope's classic Chronicles of Barsetshire series pits reformer John Bold against Septimus Harding, the precentor of Barchester Cathedral and warden of Hiram's Hospital, an almshouse supported by a bequest to the local diocese. As Bold works to expose the fact that more of the charity's income goes to Harding than to its bedesmen, he begins to take a romantic interest in Harding's youngest daughter, Eleanor. In this audio edition, narrator David Shaw-Parker delivers a winning performance that keeps listeners engaged throughout. With a deep, accented voice Shaw-Parker brings this 19th-century novel to life. His timing and tone are spot-on and he creates distinct voices for the book's many characters. (Apr.) Library Journal Review

Septimus Harding is a simple clergyman whose life is turned upside down when he is accused of graft and corruption by so-called social reformers. However, who is really on trial here, the Church of England, the news sheets, the publicity seekers? This first book in Trollope's most famous work is a fascinating exploration of 19th-century British clerical culture. David Shaw-Parker's beautiful and expressive voice enhances the listening experience. Verdict Recommended for readers who enjoy classic 19th-century English literature and/or church-related fiction.-I. Pour-El, Des Moines Area Community Coll., Ames, IA (c) Copyright 2013.
