Nervous about the impending invasion of Normandy, the World War II Allied Powers devised Operation Fortitude as an elaborate deception. Fortitude North was intended to convince the Germans of an impending attack on Norway and Fortitude South was intended to create the impression of an Allied crossing at Pas de Calais. Barbier (history, Mississippi State U.) provides a comprehensive account of Operation Fortitude from planning to conclusion that pays more attention to Fortitude North than many previous accounts and, in addition to presenting the Allied perspective, discusses German responses. In her final assessment, she judges the impact of Fortitude to be minimal. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
