This sprightly and informed account of life with cats unfolds in the intimate landscape of home (though wherever there are cats and doors, ins-and-outs can be expected). Jacqueline Damian's starting point is her own three cats - especially the Alpha male, a black-and-white longhair named Sasha, celebrated for his tail and his attitude. Housemates Charcoal and Tigger, while never Alpha candidates, contribute their idiosyncratic personalities. In a narrative structure cat owners will recognize, the book begins with Sasha's entrance into the household as a stray, and ends with the arrival of Tigger, another stray. In between are delightful explorations of such topics as feline politics in a multiple-cat household, love and catfood (fear of rejection by finicky eaters), negotiating with neighborhood dogs (Real Dogs are Big Dogs), decoding the litter box, and, of course, Sasha's tail. Earlier cats are fondly remembered, including the inappropriately named Elmer (mother of three) and the fragile Jean Arthur, a feline handwringer if ever there was one.In considering those fascinating creatures that agree to share our lives, the age-old question arises: Have cats been domesticated? Well... yes, but as Damian observes, "Even a world-class couch potato turns efficient predator the minute he strolls out the door."
