Gr. 7^-12. Perhaps because it is aimed at both Canadian and American audiences, there is a generic quality about this book at first. Descriptions of the ecologies of lakes, deltas, and rivers have no real-life examples to help cement the reader's understanding. But that small concern is outweighed by what ultimately turns into a thorough, engaging, and readable treatment of the importance of water in our lives. Beck details North American biomes and the intersecting cycles of water, nitrogen, and phosphorus before tackling issues of pollution, flooding, and the perils of introducing nonnative species into a region. The information is thoughtfully apportioned on double-page spreads, accented by sidebars that refine important points from the text, and by watercolors that help make the subject more accessible. Graceful as well as informative, the pictures invite readers to linger on the page and explore the interconnectedness of air, water, flora, and fauna. Glossary.
