Although Ty's characters are realistic and Little Critter's are anthropomorphic, both upbeat series are written for very beginning readers and feature small children having everyday adventures. -- NoveList Contributor

School Library Journal Review

Gr 1--3--The latest episode in Mayer's "Little Critter" series focuses on Little Sister and the night before her very first day of school. Little Critter, as usual, wants to offer help. Also, as usual, he is disorganized. It turns out he is not ready himself at all. Little Sister helps her big brother by walking him through her checklist. When the morning arrives, though, Little Sister panics because her toy duck Lucky Ducky is lost. Little Critter saves the day by finding him. Vibrant illustrations and the early reader standard of one to three lines of text per page make this title comfortably consumable by its intended audience. VERDICT A sweet new installment of the "Little Critter" series.--Jennifer Noonan
