The Knights Radiant have only ten days to prepare—and the sudden ascension of the crafty and ruthless Taravangian to take Odium’s place has thrown everything into disarray.Desperate fighting continues simultaneously worldwide—Adolin in Azir, Sigzil and Venli at the Shattered Plains, and Jasnah in Thaylenah. The former assassin, Szeth, must cleanse his homeland of Shinovar from the dark influence of the Unmade. He is accompanied by Kaladin, who faces a new battle helping Szeth fight his own demons . . . and who must do the same for the insane Herald of the Almighty, Ishar. At the same time, Shallan, Renarin, and Rlain work to unravel the mystery behind the Unmade Ba-Ado-Mishram and her involvement in the enslavement of the singer race and in the ancient Knights Radiant killing their spren. And Dalinar and Navani seek an edge against Odium’s champion that can be found only in the Spiritual Realm, where memory and possibility combine in chaos. Ten days remain until Dalinar's duel with Odium, an agreement concocted in the hope of avoiding a protracted war the mortals have no hope of winning. It turns out there is something Wit missed in negotiating the terms, and Odium is no longer the same predictable being he's been thus far. He'll exploit every loophole, including one which might let him win every kingdom which resists him. A lot can happen in eight days, and key players scatter to carry out their parts: Adolin, to help defend Azimir; Kaladin, on a journey that will require him to be more than a soldier; Dalinar, to seek truth in visions of history long forgotten or hidden. Sanderson once again weaves an enormous number of narrative threads into a cohesive whole, keeping character development and politics deftly balanced to maintain the pacing of a much less complex tale. Fans of the Stormlight Archive series (Rhythm of War, 2020) will be thrilled with the twists and turns as our heroes discover the real history of their world and its place in the Cosmere and forge their own, new paths through Odium's looming threat. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Readers have been waiting four years for the next in Sanderson's epic series, and the massive print run (one million!) backs that enthusiasm.
