The history of contemporary Iran is the history of the tensions between independence and interdependence with other nations in the quest for economic development. So argues this text, which takes stock of the challenges facing Iran in the interconnected arenas of foreign relations and economic development. It provides separate chapters on the geopolitics of the region, Iranian foreign policy, economic development, the relationship between religion and state, pluralism and diversity, women's rights, and the need to break through the US-Iran deadlock. It counsels the Iranian leadership that in order to promote development it should continue to strive for the autonomy necessary for legitimacy but must also cast off its ideological rigidity and open policy inputs to Iranians outside the clerical hierarchy in order to successfully fashion an open, liberal foreign policy.
