Description
Bársony and Daróczi belong to the original organizers of the Romany civil rights movement in Hungary. Bársony is the creator of the network of Roma institutions in Budapest; Daróczi has produced a variety of events to encourage the acceptance of the Roma and raise awareness of Roma history. Originally published in 2004 (L'Harmattan; Budapest), their text relates and analyzes Gypsy policies of the Third Reich and the treatment of the Hungarian Roma during WWII, with essays describing the process, the events, and the local historical background of the Pharrajimos--fragmentation, destruction--of the Hungarian Roma. The text includes transcriptions of interviews with survivors, and a series of texts from the debate over the interpretation of the Pharrajimos that focus on the recognition of the Roma Holocaust. Translated into English by Gábor Komáromy. Annotation ©2008 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
