Description
Robert Fitzgerald's magnificent translation of Virgil's epic poem was a major literary event at its release in 1983; today it is an acknowledged masterpiece. Profoundly poetic yet gloriously accessible, this is the best way to experience a work that has remained a centerpiece of Western civilization for 2,000 years. Fitzgerald's rendering speaks directly to the modern listener, inviting us to share the excitement, adventure, and human tears as Aeneas, the warrior hero, escapes from the burning city of Troy, embarks on a long and perilous journey, and eventually, triumphantly establishes a new nation: Rome.

After a century of civil strife in Rome and Italy, the poet Virgil wrote The Aeneid to honor the emperor Augustus by praising Aeneas, Augustus's legendary ancestor. As a patriotic epic imitating Homer, The Aeneid also set out to provide Rome with a literature equal to that of Greece. It tells of Aeneas, survivor of the sack of Troy, and of his seven-year journey: to Carthage, where he fell tragically in love with Queen Dido; to the underworld, in the company of the Sibyl of Cumae; and, finally, to Italy, where he founded Rome. It is a story of defeat and exile, and of love and war.Virgil's Aeneid is as eternal as Rome itself, a sweeping epic of arms and heroism-the searching portrait of a man caught between love and duty, human feeling, and the force of fate. Filled with drama, passion, and the universal pathos that only a masterpiece can express. The Aeneid is a book for all the time and all people. This version of The Aeneid is the classic translation by John Dryden.

Day Lewis ; edited by Sarah Butcher., The AeneidVirgil., The aeneidVirgil., The masterpiece of Rome's greatest poet, Virgil's Aeneid has inspired generations of readers and holds a central place in Western literature. The epic tells the story of a group of refugees from the ruined city of Troy, whose attempts to reach a promised land in the West are continually frustrated by the hostile goddess Juno. Finally reaching Italy, their leader Aeneas is forced to fight a bitter war against the natives to establish the foundations from which Rome is destined to rise. This magnificent poem, in the modern translation by Cecil Day Lewis, is superbly read by David Collins., This book tells the story of an epic voyage in which Aeneas crosses stormy seas, becomes entangled in a tragic love affair with Dido of Carthage, descends to the world of the dead - all the way tormented by the vengeful Juno, Queen of the Gods - and finally reaches Italy, where he will fulfill his destiny: to found the Roman people., This classical epic poem tells of the Trojan warrior Aeneas. Departing from Troy after its fall, Aeneas makes a perilous journey towards modern-day Italy. In Italy, he plays a major part in the founding of Rome. As he endures the military and social challenges related to the founding of this great city, Aeneas fights not for himself, but rather for the selfless cause of founding an enduring and influential metropolis., This enduring masterpiece tells of the epic quest of Aeneas, who flees the ashes of Troy to found a new civilization: Rome. A unique hero, Aeneas struggles and fights not for personal gain but for a civilization that will exist far into the future. Caught between passion and fate, his vision would change the course of the Western world. Virgil, Rome's greatest poet, turned a mythical legend into a national epic that would survive Rome's collapse to become the most influential book Rome contributed to Western culture., Translated from the Latin., Translator's Preface -- Book 1 -- Book 2 -- Book 3 -- Book 4 -- Book 5 -- Book 6 -- Book 7 -- Book 8 -- Book 9 -- Book 10 -- Book 11 -- Book 12 -- Glossary., Unabridged., Vintage classics ed., Vintage classics., Virgil's poem about the adventures of Aeneas after the fall of Troy., Virgil, author., Virgil., Virgil.Aeneid.New York : Viking, 2006, Z0VIA, [United States] :Blackstone Audio, Inc. :Made available through hoopla,2011., [United States] :HighBridge, a division of Recorded Books :1995., [United States] :Naxos :Made available through hoopla,2002., [United States] :Naxos :Made available through hoopla,2015., [United States] :Tantor Audio :Made available through hoopla,2010., audios, can08-29-11ma-, can10-06-17ma3, cansanwan03-10-17ma-, computerc, data file, digital, e------aw-----ff-----, eng, ff-----e------aw-----, hoopla digital., https://d2snwnmzyr8jue.cloudfront.net/rcb_9781615730858_180.jpeg, online resourcecr, othersz, pcc, qBook., qafea06-09-15mn-, qafea06-11-15mn-, qafea06-12-15mn-, qafea09-08-15mn-, spoken wordspw, texttxt, unmediatedn, volumenc, xii, 308 p. ;22 cm., xx, 416 pages ;24 cm., ©2017.
