Brazilian Portuguese, particularly as it is spoken in Rio de Janeiro, and English as it is spoken and used in both the UK and the US, are the focus of this desk dictionary. Students of the Portuguese or English language and travelers to any of the three locations will find the vocabulary and definitions reliable for current language study. The entries, though generally brief, offer pronunciation, inflection, part of speech, meanings including any special field of usage, and common phrases. Abbreviations and proper nouns appear in the single alphabetic sequence. The vocabulary of computing, business, and current affairs is up-to-date. Between the two major parts of the dictionary can be found an invaluable section on the practicalities of living in the UK or the US for Brazilian Portuguese people, and on living in Brazil for those from the UK or the US. A communication guide details examples of formal and informal written documents and describes their use. An appendix lists conjugations of Portuguese verbs and principal parts of irregular English verbs. ^BSumming Up: Recommended. Beginning and intermediate students. R.
