display_description The United States uses large amounts of fuel. Americans make up about 5 percent of the global population, yet consumes 25 percent of the world's petroleum. Most of that petroleum is burned as gasoline in cars and trucks. Each year Americans burn about 140 billion gallons of gasoline and 40 billion gallons of diesel fuel. That's enough to drive an average U.S. car around the world nearly 2 billion times! Rising gasoline prices and concerns about global warming have increased national interest in renewable fuels which are plant-based and can be more easily replaced than fossil fuels.
