Laura Ingalls and her family are heading to Kansas! Leaving behind their home in the Big Woods of Wisconsin, they travel by covered wagon until they find the perfect spot to build a little house on the prairie. Laura and her sister Mary love exploring the rolling hills around their new home, but the family must soon get to work, farming and hunting and gathering food for themselves and for their livestock. Just when the Ingalls family starts to settle into their new home, they find themselves caught in the middle of a conflict. Will they have to move again?

The nine books in the timeless Little House series tell the story of Laura’s real childhood as an American pioneer, and are cherished by readers of all generations. They offer a unique glimpse into life on the American frontier, and tell the heartwarming, unforgettable story of a loving family.

Though the settings of their books may be different, both Kirkpatrick Hill and Laura Ingalls Wilder's book are character-driven, heartwarming stories with a strong sense of place. Both authors set their hopeful stories on frontiers -- Wilder in the 19th century prairie, while Hill writes about the Alaskan wilderness. -- Kelly White
These authors' lively, moving fiction for older children was often inspired by their own lives on the American frontier (Laura Ingalls Wilder) and in New England (Louisa May Alcott). They warmly recall family life and the triumphs and trials of growing up as strong girls in the late 19th century. -- Melissa Gray
Although Arleta Richardson's books focus explicitly on Christian faith and Laura Ingalls Wilder's do not, both pen series that follow likeable, authentic girls living in late nineteenth-century America from childhood to adulthood. -- Autumn Winters

School Library Journal Review

Gr 3-6-Laura Ingalls Wilder fans will rejoice at the fine presentation of her novels in audio format. Cherry Jones brings to life Pa, Ma, Laura, and all the other characters. Performed at the right tempo for the intended audience, Jones changes her voice just enough for each character so they can easily be distinguished. Singing period songs as Pa, exclaiming with delight over some new discovery as Laura, or gently scolding as Ma, Jones keeps listeners entranced. Pa's fiddle music, performed by Paul Woodiel, enhances the presentation. As with the print versions, putting the books' content into the context of events which happened over 100 years ago will help intermediate students understand why a song about "darkeys" would be included (Little House in the Big Woods), and why certain attitudes toward minorities, particularly Native Americans, are acceptable to the characters in the books.-.Judy Czarnecki, Chippewa River District Library System, Mt. Horn Book Review

The Little House books, beloved by generations of readers, have been reissued in editions that demonstrate some poor design choices, including a narrower, sharper typeface and a thoughtless layout. The Garth Williams covers have been reproduced so that they are more brightly colored than the originals. From HORN BOOK 1994, (c) Copyright 2010.
