The increasing heterogeneity of Germany clashes with persistent (but not necessarily permanent) conceptions of German society as being based on German ethnicity. Independent researcher Klopp conducted two years of fieldwork in the mid 1990s in the city of Frankfurt am Main in an effort to uncover the challenges of immigrant integration as they are confronted across important economic, political, and social institutions, suggesting that these challenges confront people in nearly all major European cities. Chapters discuss German immigration history and national citizenship policy, the socioeconomic context of foreigner integration, integration and identity recognition in the schools, housing segregation, and representation and political incorporation.
