And his first mandate is to stay alive while everyone, even his own father, tries to kill him. He's learned to annihilate zombies and raise the dead, divination and clairvoyance, so why is learning to drive and keep a girlfriend so dang hard? But that isn't the primary skill he has to master. Survival is.And in order to survive, his next lesson makes all the others pale in comparison. He is on the brink of becoming either the greatest hero mankind has ever known.Or he'll be the one who ends the world. With enemies new and old gathering forces, he will have to call on every part of himself to fight or he'll lose everyone he cares about.Even himself.

Publisher's Weekly Review

In Kenyon's latest installment in the Chronicles of Nick series, 14-year-old Nick Gautier continues to learn about his heritage and destiny in a world where vampires, demons, and gods are very real. An excellent student at a private school in New Orleans, Nick has a way of always finding trouble. This time around, someone is posting lies about other students-lies that incite beatings and thoughts of suicide. With all the evidence indicating that Nick is the culprit, he and his friends must work to set things right. Holter Graham-who read the previous books in the series-provides engaging narration and well-rendered voices for all the book's recurring characters. As Nick, his voice is youthful and light and totally believable. For the book's villains, Graham's voices are equally spot-on accurate and entertaining. A thoroughly entertaining listen. Ages 12-up. Booklist Reviews

In this newest entry in the Chronicles of Nick series, the prequel to Kenyon's long-running Dark Hunters series, 15-year-old Nick Gautier tries to balance his ordinary life of school, work, and home and dodge new and old enemies, gathering forces, and evildoers out to get him. Even with his demon bodyguards in constant attendance, it's a tough job, and when someone—or something—starts targeting kids at his school, Nick finds himself in real danger. The narrator of previous series titles, Graham reads in a light tenor voice with a suggestion of a southern drawl, conveying both Nick's snarky humor and inner uncertainties as he tries to discover who is pulling the strings and what the connection is to his future destiny. Alternating tones, pacing, and inflections to voice all characters, Graham smoothly narrates this action-packed, suspenseful tale, a must-listen for series fans. Grades 7-12.
