"You're not the princess type." So ends Mihi's friendship with her (now former) best friend. So begins an innovative coming-of-age fairy tale untelling in which three young girls confront racism, meet heroes, and answer the question of whether being a princess is really all it's cracked up to be. The story is painfully relevant to all too many kids, and the narrator brings it to life in a way that is sure to pull at any listener's heartstrings. Yet the author couches these big emotions in a fun and hopeful fantasy adventure that, though the plot lines wrap up well enough to make a stand-alone book, will still leave readers on the edge of their seats for the sequel. Fortunately, listeners are treated to a sneak peak of the next volume at the end to leave them clamoring for more. Grades 3-6. Copyright 2023 Booklist Reviews.
