Library Journal Review

Thomas (scarlettthomas.co.uk) follows up her well-received novels PopCo (2004) and The End of Mr. Y (2006) with another delightful book. While struggling to write her novel, Meg Carpenter keeps herself and her useless boyfriend afloat by writing genre fiction and reviewing books for the local paper. When Meg receives a pseudoscientific book promising everlasting life, the narrative takes a metaphysical turn through a sprinkling of vignettes, flashbacks, and story-less stories. Though this intriguing tale will leave audiences with more questions than answers, those willing to stick out the ride will not regret it. The excellent narration by British actress Sarah Le Fevre transports readers to Devon. Sure to be appreciated by those liking nontraditional novels such as Audrey Niffenegger's The Time Traveler's Wife. ["Persistent readers will be charmed by Meg's outlook on life and rooting for her finally to discover her own unique voice," read the review of the Houghton Harcourt pb original, LJ 7/10.-Ed.]-Donna Bachowski, Orange Cty. Booklist Reviews

Various characters are still reeling from the tragic events and situations in The Pure in Heart (2007) in this latest series title. Inspector Simon Serrailler is taking an extended vacation on a Scottish island, while his sister, Cat, is mourning the sudden death of her husband and dealing with her rebellious teenage son. But then Serrailler is called back to investigate the murders of two "soiled doves" (prostitutes). Pacey keeps the plot of this British procedural moving and does a stellar job with a wide cast of characters. He uses gruff and defensive tones for the prostitutes and a strident and breathy voice for a pious busybody hell-bent on improving the lot of the working girls. We hear the heartsickness in Cat's voice as she tries to put herself back together. Listeners need to stick with at least three CDs before the story takes off, making this a better choice for series fans than newcomers. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
