Library Journal Review

This wonderfully revealing film makes clear the phenomenon of artist Ai Weiwei: his monumental work (the Bird's Nest stadium at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the wall of backpacks, the sunflower seeds at the Tate Modern), his provocative activism (confronting the Chengdu police in 2009, his 2011 jail term), and his personal life (his out-of-wedlock son, his 40 cats). Born in 1957, he can claim the ability to combine these elements and explain them in good English, laced with obscenities (reminding us of the decade he spent in New York). Although he seems arrogantly disdainful of authority, Ai shows his sincere moral convictions by putting himself in danger; his huge Beijing studio was demolished in 2011 for no apparent reason. Thoroughly modern, Ai blogs, tweets, and snaps photos in order to document his art and life. He is now rich, famous, and powerful and could work comfortably anywhere but chooses to continue to live in China and protest that government's policies. -VERDICT With excellent production quality, this thoroughly engrossing portrait of a heroic challenger to oppression in China is recommended for most audiences.-Kitty Chen Dean, New York (c) Copyright 2013.
