Description

Count along with Rooster in this Ready-to-Read edition of a favorite story from Eric Carle. One fine morning, a rooster sets off to see the world. Soon he’s joined by two cats, then three frogs, then four turtles, then five fish. But one group by one, his new friends decide to head home, leaving the rooster alone again—and ready to return to his own comfortable home as well. With his colorful collage illustrations and text that introduces simple addition and subtraction, Eric Carle has created a beloved tale that’s been adapted into a Level 1 Ready-to-Read, making it ideal for sharing aloud with emerging readers.

General Note
SAMPLE TEXT: One morning a rooster set out to see the world. He had not gone far when he began to feel lonely. Then the rooser met two cats. Come with me to see the world, said the rooster. We would love to, said the cats. So they set off down the road. Then the rooser and the cats met three frogs. Would you like to see the world? asked the rooster. Why not? said the frogs. We are not busy now. So the frogs followed the rooster and the cats. Then the rooster, the cats, and the frogs met four turtles. Would you like to see the world? asked the rooster. It might be fun, snapped one of the turtles. So they all set off to see the world.

Horn Book Review

Previously published as picture books, these beginning readers contain "slightly different text[s]." To make a pancake, Jack must cut wheat, grind grain, gather an egg, and so on. Rooster's journey to see the world is cut short when his traveling companions bail on him. Carle's striking illustrations and the approachable (though dull) texts will encourage new readers.
