Description
The first Olympics took place in 776 BC in the Greek city, Olympia. The games were part of a religious festival that honored Zeus. He was the king of the gods in Greek mythology. Greek cities, called city-states, were often at war with each other, but during the Olympics, all of Greece agreed to a truce. This meant that people could travel safely to the games. Many of their events are still practiced today in our modern Olympics.
