Library Journal Review

A pickpocket lifts a rookie cop's gun, which is then used to commit murder, and the incensed policeman (a young and promising Toshiro Mifune) makes it his mission to recover the weapon. In his tenth film, Akira Kurosawa digs deeper than the usual crime-thriller genre piece to probe the sordid underworld of postwar Japan. Although not pristine, the presentation fairly depicts the cloudy milieu. For larger collections. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
