Notes

General Note
"For this edition of [The story of little black Sambo], the little boy, his mother, and his father have been given authentic Indian names"--Colophon.
General Note
There was a little boy named Babaji. His mother made him a fine suit of clothes and his father gave him a beautiful umbrella and new shoes. One day feeling so good in his new clothing, he goes for a walk in the jungle. As he walks he runs into a tiger who threatens to eat him, but he talks his way out of this situation by offering the tiger his beautiful red coat. The tiger accepts thinking that this would make him the grandest tiger in the jungle. As Babaji walks on he runs into another tiger and another tiger and gets threatened again and again and each time he offers them an article of clothing and each one accepts thinking that what they each have will make them the grandest tiger in the jungle. Little Babaji is stripped almost bare, but in the end vanity and pride has its consequences.
