Description
County Court registrations of free status on the part of free Negroes,A typical entry gives the following information: Name of person being registered; age; physical description; basis of free status; and date of registration. In the case of manumissions, there is usually a reference to the name of the slaveholder executing the manumission and a cross reference to the relevant deedbook where the manumission is recorded. The information given in the section relating to how one obtained his or her freedom may also contain information about the registrant's family, including the names of siblings and the names of the registrant's parents or other kin. Often the name of the individual testifying on behalf of the Black's free status is given. After proper registration, the registrant recieved a certificate as to his free status and sometimes the date of delivery of that certificate is given.
