Choice Review

Bercovici (geology and geophysics, Yale Univ.) excels in explaining how humans have come to learn so much information about all aspects of the universe. The opening chapter tells of the big bang and the commencement of the universe and galaxies. This is followed by discussions related to the stars, elements, the solar system, the Earth (with its tectonic plates and their influence), continents, oceans, the atmosphere, climate, and finally, life and humans. The author carefully explains not only what humans know, but how this information has been gleaned and the limits to knowledge. To fit the extent of this discussion into 100 pages (more or less) means a word-packed little book with few illustrations. The work concludes with suggestions for further reading and a short topical index. Overall, the scientifically literate general reader will enjoy this book. It will be helpful to undergraduates and can also serve as supplementary course material. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-division undergraduates; general readers. --Martha Dickinson, Maine Maritime Academy
