"Emilia, a Polish widow and her ailing mother manage to eke out a living, and it is while she has a rare moment for her only enjoyment - painting - that she meets Norman, an American soldier involved in war-crime investigations. both their lives have been disrupted by the war. Norman has seen too much to be able to return home easily but he feels he has found a woman who could be his partner for life, although hthey have no common language and can only communicate by gestures, or clumsily, through an interpreter." -- records for earlier editions.
