Choice Review

It is estimated that one in five US adults suffer from a mental illness, and that nearly half of them will not seek treatment. The present reference work is written with this population in mind, as it intentionally breaks down medical concepts and jargon for the layperson. The seventh edition of this book largely maintains the same structure and content as the sixth (2016) but updates statistics, terminology, and medical findings. The 634-page book contains 62 unique chapters that are organized into 8 overarching parts, including "The Brain and Mental Health" and "Pediatric Mental Health Concerns." The chapters provide definitions, key statistics, lists of symptoms, and preventative advice. The book also provides information pertinent to diverse populations, including racial minorities, LGBT individuals, and immigrants. The back matter comprises a glossary, phone numbers for national crisis hotlines and helplines, contacts for national mental health organizations, and a thorough index. The book does not contain a bibliography of consulted works, which may raise questions about its reliability; however, a team of senior medical professionals served as consultants for its content, and essential documents are mentioned within the text. Summing Up: Recommended. Undergraduates and general readers. --Brandon K. West, State University of New York at Geneseo
