Description

Boy meets girl in this story of reluctant friendship that introduces young readers to the concept of similes   Summer drags, like a book that starts out good, then isn’t. The boy is bored, like a frog waiting for a fly to buzz by. So the boy hops on his bike and heads for the playground, where he finds a girl on a swing who beckons him to join her. At first, the boy is reluctant, but soon they are having fun like best friends, like characters in a book with a happy ending.

School Library Journal Review

PreS-Gr 1--A young boy rides his bike through the neighborhood during a sleepy summer day in search of excitement. When he stumbles upon a girl on the swing sets, he makes a fast friend and delves into a fun-filled afternoon. Much like Raczka's other titles, including Snowy Blowy Winter and Spring Things, this tale is full of poetic elements. In fact, the entire story is told in similes, such as the young girl freezing "like a doe who knows she is being watched." The illustrations add to these playful and creative allusions, as the page is full of black and gray images, while the object of comparison appears in vivid color. VERDICT This sweet tale about lazy summer days and friendship will resonate with both younger and older readers. A solid additional purchase for any collection.--Kaitlin Malixi, Kensington Health Sciences Academy, Philadelphia
