Description
The personal papers described in this guide were collected by Mrs. Mildred O'Neill because of her interest in national, regional, and local environmental concerns and because of her participation in Arlington citizens' advisory groups. Researchers will find in this record group information on the Potomac River, local streams, land use, air and water pollution, water conservation, and the impact of Interstate 66. In addition, there are newsletters of such organizations as the Northern Virginia Conservation Council, and the results of a telephone survey to determine the feasibility of paper recycling. Smaller files touch on a wide variety of other environmental challenges facing Arlington, the nation, and the world.
Biographical or Historical Data
Mrs. Mildred O'Neill was a school librarian in Fairfax County, Virginia. Between 1972 and 1976 she served in various capacities for the Arlington Environmental Improvement Commission. This Commission is a citizens' advisory group with several working committees such as solid waste management, and stream quality. Mrs. O'Neill served on both of these committees and as chair of the public education committee.
