Musicians meet with a lot of rejection, especially when they're young and annoying people with their efforts. Little Bear, an enthusiastic, teddy-like flutist, plays her instrument all day. The first two pages show musical notes curving around her as she plays outside, serenades her toys, sits on the potty, and sleeps with the flute next to her. But Little Bear's playing disrupts Mrs. Sika Deer's workout, Mr. Rhinoceros' fishing, and Grandma Antelope's nap. Little Bear gives up, tossing the flute away, until Little Mole pops out of his burrow to thank Little Bear for her music. Encouraged, Little Bear takes up the flute again, and this time, she meets with applause from some ducks and foxes as more and more animals flock to the impromptu outdoor concert. The soft hues of the illustrations add a great deal of charm and comic detail (e.g., Little Bear's golden music notes cutting into the purple ones coming from Mrs. Sika Deer's boom box) to this story about playing on through discouragement.
