Description
RG 62 is a combination of material about the Glencarlyn neighborhood including the original civic association, the Carlin Springs Cooperative Association, the Glencarlyn Citizens' Association , and the Clencarlyn Community Library.
Biographical or Historical Data
In 1872, the Carlin family, owners of a sizable tract of land purchased in 1772, built and operated a resort on the area now known as Glencarlyn. The resort remained popular until the late 1880s whne competition from the resorts built along the Potomac forced it to close. In April 1887, the Carlin heirs sold ninety-four acres of land to William W. Curtis and Samuel S. Burdett. Originally known as Carlin Springs, this area was the first planned subdivision in what became Arlington County. In 1896, Carlin Springs changed its name to Glencarlyn at the insistence of the Post Office.
